Primed & Stain Grade

Order shutter components primed or stain grade.

  • Primed: ready for paint. Highland-produced parts get a lacquer-based primer at our Priming Center, with defects filled after the first coat and a 220/320 sand. Imported parts arrive nitrocellulose-lacquer primed and sanded.
  • Stain grade: left unprimed for shops that stain or clear-coat the finished shutter. Tell us the species and the look you need, and sales will match it.

Highland-produced components

We make finger-jointed (F/J) components on site, in our own mill. Then they go to our own Priming Center, where we prime and sand them to spec. After the first coat of primer, we fill any defects in the substrate before finishing.

Choose from basswood, poplar F/J primed or basswood primed. When you need a custom detail quickly, basswood primed typically runs 10–12 days from lumber to primed component.

Imported components

We import shutter components from China, and we don't import any Gesso products. The parts come nitrocellulose-lacquer primed, sanded and ready to go, so wholesalers have very little prep and less waste on each piece.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Highland-produced and imported?

Highland-produced parts are made in our mill, then primed and sanded at our own Priming Center with defects filled after the first coat. Imported parts arrive nitrocellulose-lacquer primed and sanded, and contain no Gesso products.

Where are Highland-produced parts made?

F/J components are made on site in our mill. Call sales for pickup and delivery details.

Can you prime other parts the same way?

Yes. Our custom priming service uses a lacquer-based primer with a 220/320 sand, held to the same four-sides-visible standard.
